Having a nice, neat organized closet space where everything has it’s own place makes everything so much easier. And all the mama’s said Amen!
It’s one thing to get a space organized. It’s another thing to keep it that way.
I’m sure this little stinker has something a lot to do with that : )
Below I am sharing easy and inexpensive ideas to keep your baby’s nursery closet perfectly organized and functional!
Baby Closet Organization Ideas: The Best Way to Organize a Baby’s Closet
- Sort Baby Clothes by Size
- As soon as you have a baby, people love to gift you cute baby clothes. Before your baby is even born you will likely have enough clothes to last you through the toddler years. The last thing you want is for the clothes to end up pushed in the back of a closet somewhere, only for you to later find them and realize your baby never even got to wear them!
- Sort your baby’s clothes by size and age, and use simple clothes dividers (they come in multiple colors!) to keep them organized and easily accessible.
- Use all the same hangers for a cohesive look. I like these inexpensive white plastic hangers, and I use these hanger clips to hang up shorts and pants. (If you prefer a velvet, non-slip hanger, these are a great option!)
- Once your baby outgrows a certain size, remove those clothes from the closet and store in clear labeled bins (sad, I know).
- Maximize Hanging Space
- Most closets are designed with adult clothes in mind. Baby clothes (and children’s clothes!) are small and therefore require much less vertical clearance. Take advantage and double (or even triple!) your closet space simply by adding additional hanging rods.
- If you are into easy and affordable DIY, see how we added additional hanging rods in our nursery closet HERE.
- If DIY is absolutely not your thing, easily add extra hanging rods with THIS or THIS.
Adding a second horizontal hanging rod gave this nursery closet double the amount of hanging space!
- Add Shelves for Additional Storage
- Babies need a lot of stuff! And a lot of that stuff can’t be hung on a hanger: blankets, bibs, burp cloths, socks, baby gear, hats, just to name a few! Add shelves to provide additional vertical storage.
- Read how we used an easy Ikea Billy Bookcase hack to add tons of vertical storage to our nursery closet HERE.
- If you would rather buy a product for a temporary solution, THIS, THIS, or THIS would be a great option.
- Utilize Storage Bins and Baskets
- It’s easy to stay organized when everything has a place! Use storage bins and baskets to contains smaller items such as socks, shoes, bibs, hats, etc.
- Now you can find “cube” storage bins practically everywhere, and they make the perfect inexpensive nursery storage solution.
- Would you believe me if I told you these white storage bins are from the DollarTree?! Storage does not have to be expensive! If your local DollarTree doesn’t have them in store, you can order a case of 36 (!) and choose Free In-Store Pick-Up as your shipping option. Now, I know you probably don’t need 36 storage bins in one closet. But I use these storage bins everywhere in our house: closets, playroom, cleaning storage, craft storage, etc.
- Here are some more inexpensive storage bins: this is a great price on a pack of six and is Prime eligible!; I love the rope detail on the handle of this one; and the tassel on this one is so cute (it also comes in pink and gray)!!
- Display Accessories and Keepsakes
- Babies don’t keep! Put those sweet accessories and keepsakes on display while you can!
- THIS is a must-have for storing (and preserving the shape of) those sweet, sweet bonnets.
- And if you have a girl, THIS is a such a cute and sweet way to display all of those bows. This is a great way to store headbands. Practical and they look darling too!
I am sentimental and love to display our meaningful baby heirlooms (see how I framed both of my babies “Coming Home Gowns” HERE).
On the top shelf of the nursery you can see where I have displayed the hat John Davis wore on his first birthday, as well as some nice gift boxes from some of our favorite places to buy “special occasion” outfits.
On the lower shelf I have both of my babies monogrammed blue bow swaddles (see where they wore them in their newborn photos HERE and HERE), as well as some of their sweet little baby shoes.
On the nursery closet door I have this little “Baby is Sleeping” pillow that hung on both mine and Brother’s nursery doors when we were babies (told you I’m sentimental!).
On the back wall of the nursery I hung the adorable door hanger that Mother so graciously hand-painted to hang on the hospital door when John Davis was born. (When Fletcher was born she painted over it to put his monogram on it, too!).
Also on the nursery closet door hangs the sweet diaper wreath that was used at my baby shower. I just think it is so sweet that I can’t bear the thought of getting rid of it.
- Plan Ahead
- Keep an empty clear storage bin in the closet. As soon as your baby outgrows an outfit, it goes in the bin.
- I like to store our baby clothes in clear contains (like these). I always use clear storage bins so that when they are stored away you can still easily see what is inside.
- I use THESE clear labels to easily label and organize the bins. I love that the label can easily be switched out as your children grow (which is way too fast!).
