How to Make Your Own Custom Monogram Wall Decor

DIY custom monogram wall decor is an easy way to add a personalized touch to any room. In less than an hour you can easily create this large scale piece of custom art that instantly elevates any space in your home.

Custom wood monograms come in many shapes, sizes and styles, so this monogram wall decor can be completely customized to fit any space or style.

I originally made this custom monogram wall decor for the nursery back in 2016 when we lived in our very first fixer upper home.

It was the perfect solution to add a large scale piece of custom artwork at a very affordable price point. Not only does it make a perfect statement piece in any room, but it is so easy to replicate and gives you a ton of bang for your buck.

Six years later, I love it so much that it still hangs in our traditional blue and white nursery today.

What you need to make your own custom Monogram wall decor

• Wood monogram. You can choose any size or style to customize it for your space! I used a 22 inch wood monogram for reference.
• Large canvas
• Craft paint in the color of your choosing
• Foam paintbrushes
• Matte Finish protective spray
• Glue
• Sandpaper
• Sawtooth Hangers

How To Create Your Own custom monogram wall decor

1. Sand wood monogram – use fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand your unfinished raw wood monogram. This will smooth out any rough edges and give your finished product a perfectly smooth finish.

2. Paint – Use a foam paintbrush and craft paint to paint your wood monogram. For a smooth finish, lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper in-between each coat.

I used Folk Art craft paint in the color “Light Blue.”

3. Add a Protective Finish – Let the paint dry completely and then spray the wood monogram with two light coats of a protective finish. Be sure to do this step outside.

I used this Krylon protective finish spray. I love that it is non-yellowing, dries almost immediately, and is a matte finish. You cannot tell it is there!

4. Glue Monogram onto Canvas – Use a strong permanent adhesive glue to attach the wood monogram letters onto the blank canvas.

Follow the manufactures instructions for dry time before hanging your custom monogram decor on the wall.

5. Hang on the Wall – Attach two sawtooth hangers directly to the back of the wood frame of the canvas to hang your monogram art on the wall.

And there you have it – a large, adorable statement piece for around $50!

I love the fact that I can eventually repaint the monogram a different color so it can transition with the boys as they get older.

The easiest way to hang your new custom wood monogram wall decor is by using inexpensive sawtooth hangers. They come with two small nails to hammer the sawtooth hangers directly to the wood frame on the back of the canvas.
